ANNOUNCEMENT
Our Summer Issue
We are pleased to announce the publication of
Asian Perspective, volume 49, number 3 (Summer 2025), published by Johns Hopkins University Press for the Institute for Far Eastern Studies of Kyungnam University and made available online at Project Muse (https://muse.jhu.edu/issue/55481).
This issue contains the
Special Issue on Southeast Asia–Middle East Relations – Part 1.
The special issue examines the conceptual and practical complementarity of ‘transregionalism’ and ‘new bilateralism’ in Middle Eastern–Southeast Asian interactions, showing how adaptable, issue-specific collaboration channels have been created, and how key regional actors—Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore—leverage these mechanisms to engage in strategic partnerships. This first part includes an introduction to the special issue, as well as an exploration of relations between the Arab-Turko-Persianate (ATP) and Malay world from a longue durée perspective, and research that clarifies the conceptual and practical complementarity of these two concepts and their theoretical significance in Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian interactions.
Among the regular submission articles, this issue of the journal includes an investigation into the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Russian and Chinese foreign policies in Central Asia; a study on the China-Myanmar relationship and its complex interdependence based on an analysis of night-time light; an examination on the political implications of COVID-19 in the context of retrospective voting in South Korea; and an analysis of the low salience of class cleavage as an influence in Taiwanese politics. Our regular ‘Book Symposium’ features reviews and response on TJ Cheng, Uradyn E. Bulag, and Mark Selden’s
A Chinese Rebel beyond the Great Wall: The Cultural Revolution and Ethnic Pogrom in Inner Mongolia (University of Chicago Press, 2023).
All back issues of the journal (from 1977 to 2025), including past special issues, are also available at Project Muse (https://muse.jhu.edu/journal/733).
